MELANOTAN 2 • Pigmentation Research Peptide
Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and interacts with the body’s melanocortin receptor system. It was originally investigated for its ability to stimulate melanogenic activity, the biological process involved in producing melanin and skin pigmentation.
Early Phase I human research found that Melanotan II produced measurable increases in pigmentation in study participants. Researchers described tanning activity following a relatively small number of administered doses, making its effects on the melanocortin system an intriguing area of peptide research.
Interestingly, researchers also observed effects beyond pigmentation. Small placebo-controlled human studies subsequently investigated Melanotan II and the melanocortin system in relation to sexual arousal and erectile response. These studies reported significantly greater erectile activity with Melanotan II than placebo, along with increased sexual desire in some participants.

Research note: Melanotan II remains an investigational peptide. Early studies were small, and reported adverse effects included nausea, fatigue, decreased appetite, yawning and flushing. Health Canada specifically lists Melanotan I and II among unauthorized injectable peptide products and warns that “research use only” labelling does not make such products authorized for human use.
